While the video sites that debuted last week during TechCrunch50 and DEMO--like Invision.tv--got publicity bumps, I got to take a closer look at a site for searching online video that's been around for a while now. OVGuide (the OV stands for "online video," of course) was founded two years ago by Dale Bock. He says he didn't see anyone else putting together this kind of service, where people can find what they want across the breadth of viral and professional videos going up by the thousands everyday.
OVGuide isn't aggregating videos for you to watch; it's a search engine backed by live editors. They don't discriminate. You can find all the usual viral videos and lots of TV shows and movies in their entirety. The guide also includes online radio and podcasts, and even links to adult fare.
Sources run the gamut from Hulu to all the major networks with live shows to lesser-known hosts of digital videos. Chad Cooper, director of marketing and editorial content for OVGuide, told me that it's impossible for anyone to track the sources of videos these days. "We help declutter the online video sites and give users an aerial-view site approach," he said.
Humans curate and organize the videos on an hourly basis, so you're always getting access to the hot stuff. The top searches are listed along with the "OVBuzz" on items being searched at that very moment.
Interestingly, I couldn't find everything I wanted my first time out--because the default search is for Movies
